The Sinsational 7 pt. II

|
Here are the other 4 sinner girls. Now we have the
Envious girl, the greedy Las Vegas showgirl, the never satisfied
girl, eating and covered in ice cream and other erotic food.
The self-obsessed pride girl with the mirror. She doesn’t see
how she’s going to end up just like everybody else.
The luxurious girl, never satisfied. The girl in rage, her hand rests on
the skull of whom ever she wants to crush. The other fist in flames.
And the lazy, alcohol drinking girl with holes in her stockings.

The Sinsational 7 pt.I

Actually the  Sinsational 7-logo and the girls where not meant for one and another. But hey, they fit nicely!

It’s pretty obvious what my theme was. This series was actually a training to draw girls.

The 7 deadly sins theme has evolved into something better but that only exists in my mind yet.

All in good time.

Medusa & the origins of Jolly Roger pt. 3

|

These are some decorative Flags which we used to hang all around the venue at Medusa nights. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who remember!    The designs corresponded with a certain theme I picked, to change the atmosphere of the evening everytime. Later on there were a lot of different flags to choose from.

Original Medusa Logo Design 01-2002

Original Medusa Logo Design 01-2002

These were actually the first Logo Backdrops and the original Logo Design.
The Logo Design was done in a very short time. It needed to be finished quickly for the flyer.
There still is a flag with Medusa’ s head underneath her name.
The Medusa flag you see here was smaller because it was always inside.
The big one we used to hang outside above the entrance of the venue, for all to see!
The head is just a detail of that flag. I will post the full picture another time.
The original drawing of the Medusa head is on black paper.
I did that to see how I could translate the lighting of the face to a black background, like the textile I was going to use to make the backdrop.

Medusa & the origins of Jolly Roger pt. 1

This party flag was one of the first I did.
At the time, I was involved with a small group of people in
setting up a big monthly gothic-industrial party in Amsterdam.
It was to be called Medusa.
We wanted to decorate the venues, but the decorations had to be
easily transported and stored as well.
And also to promote the party there had to be a logo and that logo
had to be on flyers and a big backdrop on the front of the building.
A big part of that building still stands and has been renovated,
but sadly that brilliant part is gone! That’s why I’ve put the Memento Mori
Flag here first.   Actually this flag was the first try-out of a new technique I had to invent to produce these decorations. The flag is entirely hand made and hand printed.

Frithjof Grimme

I’ve always enjoyed working with materials which leave an irreversible result.
I’ve been working with pen and ink and colouring pencils since high school.
Later I started to use markers and fineliners.
The use of certain materials depend on what kind of end result I want to have. Which makes sense,
but I’m not that orthodox with materials and techniques.
That’s why I also invented some of  my own techniques.
With creating the Logo Backdrops and Decorative Flags, I had to.

This is the Illustration I made for my daughters Birth Announcement Card. Below you can see a pop arty like portrait, I did of her with the same technique I use to make the Flags and Backdrops.
