The following poem is a rebelious ‘Smartlap’ about good ol’ Amsterdam as it was and ended. A ‘Smartlap’ was a flag with the lyrics of a songtext, which was held up high in the old cafes of Amsterdam to sing along with the performer. Not even 10 years ago a decade of tradition in undergroundparties in squats and other old buildings, was still alive. Though changed over the years it was the home of a lot of people in the underground movement of the city. Amsterdam as I knew it came to an end. People got older, got a ‘real’ life, but also the city changed. It got cleaned up and became beautiful but boring.

Smartlap

Mijn vader zei ooit,

Het komt niet meer terug…nooit,

Dat Amsterdam dat ik kende,

Die humor en die heerlijke bende.

Die stad aan de IJ-plas,

Is niet meer wat het ooit was!

Ik ben van een generatie later,

Ik bestond toen nog uit water.

Zijn Amsterdam heb ik nooit gezien.

Pas In de jaren ’90, toen was ik 19,

Begon mijn amsterdams bestaan,

Ik gaf er mijn eigen invulling aan.

Kraakfeessies in donkere panden,

Fabrieksterreinen, onbekende landen,

Graffiti’s, kapotte ramen, rotte muren,

Mistige, Spookachtige, vroege uren.

vleermuizen, punks en ander gespuis,

Gaven Amsterdam een heerlijk soort ruis.

Zij gaven die veroverde broedplaatszone

Het onmaatschappelijke en ongewone.

Voor deze ‘excessen’ was geen plaats meer

In de binnenstad aan het IJ-meer.

Langzaamaan werd het verdreven,

Dat eigen, non-conforme leven.

Ieder geveltje, iedere straat, elke stoep

Werd aangeveegd en ontdaan van poep.

Renovatie, projectontwikkelaars, de rode loper,

Dat alles werd uitgerold voor de rijke koper.

Het grote geld werd als doel ingezet,

Veilige voorgeprogrammeerde pret.

Een laag glansvernis van het duurste soort,

Daalde neer op dit stedelijk oord.

Amsterdam werd prachtig en mooi,

Maar waar is die heerlijke zooi?

Waar zijn al die mensen gebleven

Uit Dat rauwe Amsterdamse leven?

De underground van deze stad

Sijpelt nog wel door in overgebleven gat.

Als een fenix, rijzend uit eigen vuur;

een nieuwe generatie, een nieuw uur.

maar op een dag herkennen ook zij,

Hun stad niet meer daar aan het ij.
